MUSIC

Nurturing creative minds

This term's focus has been on composing music. All primary levels have been taught some basic elements and techniques for composition. The upper grades are composing their music along with a drum machine that is to develop a better sense of timing. The upper grades are also challenged to develop chord progressions.

Composing Music

Each student is challenged to create their own music in a given key. The students also have the opportunity to listen to various sounds the keyboards have and compare and contrast the multitude of textures and various attack and decay properties of the sounds. Each level is also covering music theory in class such as reading music and keyboard technique.

Games and not just games.

Music and drama games are a great incentive for the class to work hard. Although the students see the games as simply fun, the games also have educational components and skill development such as, timing, control, confidence building, concentration and refinement of basic drama skills.

Primary to Secondary Transition Forum

On Wednesday 14 September 2016 Grade 6 attended the Primary to "Secondary Transition Forum" held at Springvale Town Hall.

This was hosted by the Youth Services Department at Greater Dandenong Council.

"The Transitions Forum" was designed to start a conversation with students, and to complement other transitions activities that our school offers. The discussions required students to work in groups to create posters which explore the things that they are looking forward to about secondary school, as well as the things which might be worrying them.

The children spoke openly and honestly with each other and their teachers. They were able to share their thoughts and ideas with Grade Six students from other local Primary Schools.

We all had a great morning!

Jump Rope for Heart

Early in Term 4 the Primary School took part in the "Jump Rope for Heart" Fundraising Activity.

Established in Australia in 1983, Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is renowned for being Australia's most popular physical activity and fundraising program in schools.

Low levels of physical activity have been shown to be associated with increased risk of blocked arteries, high blood pressure and overweight and obesity among children as young as 12 years of age.

Evidence that physical inactivity in childhood and adolescence may track to young adulthood is of particular concern. Jump Rope for Heart provides a unique opportunity to engage children in physical activity in a noncompetitive way and encourage them to develop lifelong heart healthy habits.

At the end of the program a special "Jump Off Day" is held to celebrate and demonstrate the skills learnt and health knowledge gained.

Thank you to all the children who contributed for their donations and fundraising efforts.
